Chapter 1
“Somebody, please, help me!” She was gasping for air. She tried to scream as she kicked her feet and with waving arms tried to remain above water but the weight of the dress and cloak was dragging her down. It was no use. The current soon caught her up in its grip. She could not find her way up again. It was dark and wet. She was tumbling in the water, feeling as if her lounges were bursting, her head pounding. Had she hit it in her fall?
She struggled to keep her mind clear. She had no strength left to keep fighting for her life. Her mind began to drift. Silence was all around her. She sank into darkness. Is this it? she thought as she sank to the bottom of the river. She was on the brim of unconsciousness when she felt her body being tugged upwards again. Strong arms folded tightly around her. There was only one thought left in her head, safe, she felt safe.
She wakes up on the bank of the river, totally deprived of any memory of why she is in Gretna Green or who she is. Her rescuer is a blue eyed northerner, who is very handsome, of course. Sounds interesting?-xxx-
“Miss? Can you hear me, miss?” a dark voice asked anxiously. Cautios hands were caressing her face and she tried to open her eyes. “Miss? Can you hear me, miss?” Her eyes fluttered opened and she tried to focus on the direction from where the dark voice came. She stared up into dark blue and very worried eyes set in a handsome face. Suddenly aware of the state she was in she tried to sit up. “Do not move, miss. You might have a concussion. You took a really nasty fall, there.” He pressed her gently to the ground again. She let him, she did not have the strength to stay up. He was wet too. Was this her rescuer? Her hero? His dark hair was plastered down on his head, and he was coat less.
“Where am I?” She coughed as she gasped for air. She tried to remember what had happened. She had fallen into the water, that much was clear, but before that?
